Helpful Hints for Completing the Graduate School Application File

1.  When completing the application form either electronically or by paper, please note the following:

(a)  If you do not have a U.S. social security number, you should simply leave the space for this blank.

(b)  For "Campus of Intended Registration," indicate "Storrs."

(c)  If you would like to be considered for a graduate assistantship or Departmental fellowship, you should check "Yes" in the box following the question "Are you applying for a Graduate Assistantship or Fellowship?"  Both U.S. citizens and international students are eligible to apply.  Checking this box is all that is necessary to apply for these forms of aid.  No other forms are required.  Note, however, that U.S. citizens or permanent residents who would like to apply for need-based aid need to file additional forms.  For information about both merit-based and need-based financial aid, please consult the Graduate School.

(d)  The Department does not have any specific requirements regarding "Academic or Employer References."  However, you should provide the names of (and seek letters of recommendation from) those people best able to evaluate your potential to succeed in graduate studies in Psychology.  (See #4 below.)

2.  The "Residence Affidavit" form must be completed by all Connecticut residents and submitted with their supporting documents package.

3.  You must submit official transcripts from each college or university you have attended.  These transcripts must be original and bear the seal of the college or university.  Copies without the seal are not acceptable.  You should request that the college or university you attended send the official transcripts directly to you in a sealed envelope.  You should then send the sealed transcript(s) along with your other application materials in the single package that you submit to the Graduate School.  Please be sure to request your transcripts early enough to ensure that you will receive them in time to include them in your application package.  If you have taken courses previously at the University of Connecticut, you should request a transcript from the Office of the Registrar and include this transcript in your package.

4.  You must submit three letters of recommendation from people who are able to evaluate your potential for successful graduate study in Psychology.  There are no specific forms to be used for these recommendations.  Individuals providing recommendations should be asked to write a letter (on letterhead) that indicates the capacity in which they have known you, the length of time they have known you, and their candid assessment of your prior and likely future academic performance.  You should request that each individual put the letter of recommendation into a sealed envelope and sign the envelope across the seal.  You must then submit the letters along with your other supporting materials to the Graduate School at the following address:

University of Connecticut
Graduate School
438 Whitney Road Ext., Unit 1006
Storrs, CT 06269-1006, USA

5.   Your personal letter of application should provide additional information regarding your background and motivation for graduate study in Psychology.  No special form is required.  More information regarding what to include in this letter is provided in the instructions that accompany the paper application form, or on the Application web page of the Graduate School.

6.  GRE scores for Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical.    You should arrange to have these scores sent directly to University of Connecticut.  The University's code is 3915.  You should indicate "Psychology" as the department to receive these scores. Both paper and computer based test scores are acceptable.

More detailed instructions regarding the submission of these items are provided on the Application web page of the Graduate School, or on the sheet entitled "Information and Instructions for the Applicant," which will accompany the paper application form when you download it or receive it from the Graduate School (if you do a paper application).  Once again, please follow the checklist provided by the Graduate School on their Application web page carefully.
